Organizations & teams
The platform has four ways to group people. They look alike but do different jobs: two of them are shared accounts that own things, one is a sharing list, and one is a competition team.
Which is which
| Organization | Department | Workgroup | Clan | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A shared account for a company, college or team | A division inside an organization | A saved list of people to share with | A team for security challenges |
| Owns labs, domains, devices, storage | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Has its own plan and limits | Yes | Yes — a share of its organization's | No | No |
| Who creates it | Platform administrators only | Platform administrators, or the organization's owner and admins | Anyone | Anyone |
| How many you can be in | Several | Several | Several | One |
| Where to find it | Instances → Workgroups | Instances → Workgroups | Instances → Workgroups | Clan Hall |
In short:
- Use an organization or department when a group needs its own labs, storage and limits that outlive any one member.
- Use a workgroup when you just want to share your labs or templates with the same people again and again.
- Clans are for competing together — see Clans and clubs.
How an organization account works
An organization is a separate account that several people operate. When you switch to it, anything you create — a lab, a domain, a device — belongs to the organization, counts against its limits, and stays with it if you leave.
Members get access to the labs the organization owns, and share one home storage area.
The Workgroups page
Everything on this page lives under Instances → Workgroups:
| Part | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Organizations & departments | One row for each organization you belong to, with its departments indented underneath. Select a row to open that organization's page, or its gear to open its settings. This part appears only when you belong to at least one organization or department |
| My workgroups | A card for each workgroup you are in, with its member count, how many resources are shared with it, and your role in it |
| New workgroup | Creates a workgroup. Everyone sees this button |
| New organization | Creates an organization. Only platform administrators see this button |
Getting an organization
You cannot create an organization yourself. Ask a platform administrator: they create it and make you its owner. From then on you run it yourself: you add members, create departments, and change its name, picture and description. Its plan and limits stay with the administrator.
An organization's page
Select an organization or department on the Workgroups page to open its page. Only its members (and platform administrators) can open it; anyone else is sent back to the Workgroups page.
| Part | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Instances tab | Running labs shared with this account, with who deployed them and whether they are running |
| Templates tab | Templates shared with this account |
| Activity tab | Recent changes: members added or removed, roles changed, limits and settings edited, things shared or unshared — with who did it and when |
| About | The description, the owner, the handle (@name) and, for a department, a link to its organization |
| Plan & limits | The plan and each limit. ∞ means no limit of its own was set |
| Members and Departments | Who belongs, and (for an organization) its departments |
An organization's page also lists everything its departments hold. Those rows are marked via followed by the department's name.
