Clans and clubs

This page explains how to create, join and run clans and clubs. The platform has two kinds of group, and they do different jobs:

Clans

A clan is your team for capture-the-flag. You need one to deploy team challenge labs and to enter team events.

Join a clan

Open Clan Hall in the sidebar. If you are not in a clan yet you will see Join Clan and Create Clan.

There are two ways in:

  • Ask to join. Browse All clans, open one, and select Join Clan. The button changes to Request Sent until a clan admin accepts or denies you. A clan showing Not Accepting Requests has closed its door for now.
  • Accept an invite. Invitations appear on the Invites tab. Select Accept Invite or Deny Invite.

You can belong to one clan at a time, and a clan holds at most 10 members.

A request or invite can fail. The message says why:

MessageWhy
You are already in a clanLeave your current clan first
Clan members are fullThe clan already has 10 members
Clan is not accepting requestsThe owner has switched join requests off
You have a pending invite to join this clanAccept the invite on the Invites tab instead of asking
Cannot add member: clan already has maximum…The clan is registered for an event and is at the event's maximum size — see Clans during events

Create a clan

Select Create Clan and fill in:

FieldNotes
Clan NameThe display name
Clan UsernameThe clan's unique handle — used in its web address. Not your own username.
Country
Motto and DescriptionShown on the clan page
Clan AvatarSquare image
Clan BannerWide image

The form shows the allowed length for each text field and the size for each image. Both images are required. You become the clan's owner.

The form's rules, as it states them:

FieldRule
Clan Name4–30 characters, letters and spaces only
Clan Username5–20 characters, lowercase letters and numbers only. The form tells you if it is already taken. It cannot be changed later
CountryChosen from the list
Motto15–100 characters
Description30–250 characters
Clan AvatarSquare, 300×300 to 1000×1000 pixels, JPG or PNG
Clan Banner1920×150 to 2880×225 pixels, JPG or PNG

Creating a clan is free. You cannot create one while you are in another clan. A new clan starts with 1 Zeal.

Admins can later change the name, motto, description, country, avatar and banner from the clan page. The clan username stays the same.

Shown on labs.selfmade.ninja, the Selfmade Ninja Academy platform. On your own platform you will see your own domain and data.

Roles

RoleCan
OwnerEverything an admin can, plus invite people (Invite User), switch Accept Join Requests on or off, remove or demote other admins, and delete the clan. The person who created the clan.
AdminEdit the clan's details, accept or deny join requests, remove members, promote members to admin, and register the clan for events
MemberPlay the clan's team labs, chat, and leave the clan

Nobody can change their own role, and nobody can remove the owner. Only the owner can remove another admin or take admin rights away.

The owner cannot leave

The owner can delete the clan but not leave it. Any other member can leave at any time — unless the clan is locked for an event, below.

Leaving, removing and deleting

ActionWhoWhat happens
LeaveAny member except the ownerYou leave the clan immediately and can join or create another
Remove a memberOwner or adminThe member is out of the clan and is told so
Delete the clanOwner onlyEvery member leaves the clan, pending invites are canceled, and the clan is withdrawn from any event it registered for. The clan disappears from All clans and the clan leaderboard

You cannot do any of these while an event lock forbids it — see below.

Clan chat

The Discussions tab is a chat for the clan's members only. Members are notified of new messages. You can delete your own messages, and admins can delete anyone's. If you post many messages in a short time, you are asked to wait before posting again.

Clan Zeal

A clan has its own Zeal balance, separate from its members'. It grows when a member captures a flag in one of the clan's team labs (the clan earns the same Zeal as the member) and when a team-lab achievement is unlocked. It is never spent.

Clans during events

When a clan registers for a team event, its roster is locked for that event (or the whole series of rounds) until it ends. You cannot take the clan above the event's maximum size or below its minimum, and the clan cannot be deleted. The message you get says when the lock lifts. See Events.

The clan leaderboard

Clan Hall → Clan Leaderboard ranks clans by the Zeal they have earned, with ties going to the clan that spent less time. It shows each clan's members, Zeal, challenges conquered, achievements and time spent.

A clan appears on it once it has captured at least one flag in a team lab.

Clubs

A club is a community around a subject — a language, a tool, a course. Members share questions and discussions into the club, and the club page collects them.

Open Discuss → Clubs in the sidebar. If you do not see it, your platform does not have clubs switched on.

Find and join a club

The Clubs page lists All clubs and My Clubs, with search, featured and recommended clubs, and trending tags.

VisibilityHow you get in
PublicAnyone can find it and select Join Club
Invite-onlyListed, but you need an invitation — Accept & Join or Decline it on the club page
PrivateHidden from the list; members only

Inside a club

The club page is a feed of the questions and discussions shared into it, with the tabs Recent, Popular, Unanswered and Featured, and a members panel. Owners and moderators can pin posts to the top.

To post, ask a question in Discussion and choose the club under Also share in, or select Ask on the club page, which picks the club for you. A question shared into several clubs appears in all of them.

Create a club

Select Create Club. Creating a club spends Jolt and needs a minimum amount of Zeal — the Create page shows both, and whether you have enough. You can own up to five clubs, unless your platform sets a different limit.

FieldNotes
Club pictureOptional. JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 2 MB
NameAlso used to make the club's web address
Description
TagsUsed for search and filtering
VisibilityPublic, Invite-only or Private

You become the club's owner.

The name must be 3–80 characters. Creating a club costs 100 Jolt, taken when you create it; if the club cannot be created, the Jolt is refunded. The limit of five counts only clubs you own that are not archived.

Running a club

Owners and moderators can change the club's settings:

SectionDoes
GeneralPicture, name, description, visibility, and Archive Club
PermissionsWho can post — everyone, moderators and admins, or admins only
MembersSearch members, change a member's role, remove members
Pinned PostsChoose the posts pinned to the top
Edit HistoryEvery change made to the club's settings

Roles are Owner, Mod and Member. The owner can invite, promote and transfer ownership.

RoleCan
OwnerEverything a mod can, plus change the club picture and Who can post, promote members to mod or demote mods, remove mods, transfer ownership and archive the club
ModEdit the club's name, description and visibility, invite people by their email address, remove members (not other mods or the owner), and pin posts
MemberRead, post if Who can post allows it, and leave

The owner cannot leave the club. To step away, transfer ownership to another member first — you then become a mod.

Archiving takes the club out of the directory. Its posts and conversations are kept.

Club tiers

Clubs grow through five tiers:

Seed → Sprout → Grove → Forest → Biome

Each tier raises the number of members a club can hold. Promotion is decided by the platform, based on the club's size and the quality of its activity — owners cannot upgrade their own club. The club page shows the current tier and what the next one needs.

By default, each tier allows this many members:

TierMembers, at most
Seed100
Sprout500
Grove1,000
Forest5,000
Biome10,000

Your administrator can change these numbers. A new club starts at Seed. When a club is full, joining or accepting an invite fails with a message that the club is at capacity.
